University of KwaZulu Natal (UKZN) Climate Justice Network celebrated its first anniversary since it was relaunched at the university campus. This milestone event sought to reflect on the progress made in advocating for climate justice, while also paving the way for future initiatives. The gathering underscored the importance of collective action in tackling climate issues.
The event featured a lineup of inspiring speakers who delved into various pressing topics. Dean Prof. Khumalo opened the event with a warm welcome, while Dr. Zengele provided inspiring remarks that set a positive tone for the day. Presenters discussed the critical nexus between green computing and e-waste, emphasizing the need for sustainable technology practices.
A thought-provoking segment addressed the intersection of climate change and gender, highlighting how marginalized communities are disproportionately affected by environmental crises. We examined our contribution to climate change through waste and explored solutions for managing waste by Lwandile Madlala. Lindi Shozi, SAYCCC Climate Justice Coordinator, came with words of encouragement for the organisation. Attendees were also treated to insights on vision casting by Khaya Ngubane, and the network’s mission and goals were articulated with clarity and purpose by Mbalenhle Mbatha.
As we look ahead, the anniversary served as a catalyst for future initiatives. One significant outcome was the planting of another symbolic tree, representing our commitment to sustainability. Plans are already underway to plant more trees next year, with the goal of creating gardens around each one. These gardens will not only make our campus look vibrant but also serves as vital ecosystems that foster biodiversity.
Celebrating this anniversary is just the beginning. With every tree we plant and garden we cultivate, we hope to inspire a deeper commitment to climate justice within our university and beyond. Together, we can make a lasting impact for future generations.
